UNCG?s Office of University Counsel is responsible for providing leadership and legal advice on a broad spectrum of issues. Representative examples of issues addressed by University Counsel include grants and contracts, federal and state regulations, academic freedom and tenure, due process and First Amendment matters, campus security, NCAA rules, equal employment and personnel laws, nondiscrimination statutes, University and UNC system policies, financial aid, OSHA compliance, open meetings laws, the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act, HIPAA compliance, intellectual property issues including university - stakeholder interactions (corporations, funding agencies, federal & state government, philanthropic organizations, etc.), and others. University Counsel also works closely with UNC General Administration and the NC Attorney General?s Office on litigation involving the University in federal and state courts and in administrative agencies such as the NC Office of Administrative Hearings.
As a leading research university with a strong commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusion, UNCG expects its University Counsel to help foster a legal environment in which all members of the University community may learn, live, and work in an atmosphere of mutual respect and nondiscrimination. Counsel?s office further supports the University?s educational mission through presentations and written guidance on legal topics of interest to the University community. University Counsel does not provide legal assistance to students, but may provide general information about the legal system and referrals to legal aid resources. Personnel in the Office of University Counsel include two Associate University Counsels and a paralegal assistant.

Candidates must possess a demonstrated ability to seize opportunities and drive change; engage in problem solving; work effectively as a part of an institutional leadership team; employ exceptionally strong judgment and appropriate discretion; and adapt to a diverse, rapidly changing, and intellectually challenging work environment. Candidates must possess a collaborative work style, well developed organizational and communication skills, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the highest degree of integrity and professionalism.
The successful candidate will possess a law degree from an ABA accredited law school. Familiarity with a broad array of legal issues that arise in a higher education setting is preferred. The candidate must also have North Carolina State Bar membership in good standing, or licensure in good standing in another state on the date of initial employment and licensure to practice law in North Carolina within one year following initial employment. At least ten years of professional legal experience is required; prior experience as counsel in higher education is preferred.
