Spectator loses leg after controlled implosion of California power plant: police

An explosion knocks down one of the remaining towers at the old Kern Power Plant, Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 in Bakersfield, Calif.

By Tracy Jarrett, NBC News

A spectator lost his leg while watching the implosion of a decommissioned PG&E plant Saturday morning and at least four more people were injured, authorities said.

The 44-year-old man, whose name has yet to be released, was gathered along with about 1,000 other spectators to watch the planned demolition of the Pacific Gas and Electric plant in Bakersfield, Calif., the Associated Press reported.

The man lost one leg and received major injuries to the other after shrapnel from the plant explosion flew across the street and struck his lower body, police said. An officer heard the man screaming for help after several plant structures came down, police told the AP.

The man, "sustained an apparent complete amputation of one leg, and the possible amputation of the second," Bakersfield Police Lt. Scott Tunnicliffe told NBC News affiliate KGET.

In California, authorities investigated what went wrong at the demolition of a decommissioned power plant Saturday. Hundreds had gathered around what was deemed a safe area but proved to be dangerous. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

At least two other people received minor injuries that were treated on the scene, according to Tunnicliffe.

Those injured were part of a crowd gathered in a Lowe?s parking lot to watch the demolition that brought down the four-story plant decommissioned in 1986. Thousands of others lined the Rosedale Highway to watch the explosions, KGET reported.

There was a parameter set up around the plant, according to Tunnicliffe. However, according to KGET, PG&E stressed that no official accommodations were made for the general public to watch the explosions.

PG&E did not immediately respond to requests for comment from NBC News.

Roadways around the scene were reopened on Saturday, Tunnicliffe said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Pentagon asks Congress to end sequester

When the sequester became a real political threat last year, many lawmakers complained that the Pentagon didn't seem ready for the possibility of across-the-board budget cuts; now the military is sending the message to Congress that if the sequester isn't drastically changed, it will mean unacceptable defense cuts in the future.

"Under sequester level cuts, our military options and flexibility will be severely constrained," said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, as officials painted a dark picture of the Pentagon's future, saying it could mean mothballing several aircraft carriers and deep cuts in other military branches.

"The sequester level scenario would compel us to consider these changes because there would be no realistic alternative," Hagel told reporters at a Pentagon briefing.

Hagel said a recent review of the Pentagon's budget situation focused on possible cuts in management efficiency and overhead, military pay and benefits, basic force structure and size, and future defense missions.

Other than management efficiency, the Congress hasn't shown any interest in making changes to the military's health care system, or its pension and pay system - and certainly not in terms of cutting unneeded weapons systems.

So far though, Hagel's warnings haven't brought lawmakers to their knees in the Congress, as critics of the Pentagon note that even with the across the board cuts of the sequester in place, the military's budget could well remain over $500 billion each year through the end of this decade.

Congress and the sequester

Right now, the sequester almost seems likely to stay in effect, mainly because there don't seem to be the votes in Congress to agree on any other budget plan, or to agree to target the cuts instead of having them go across the board. For example:

+ Democrats would like to wipe away the sequester with more targeted cuts and tax increases; House Republicans are emphatic in their opposition to new taxes of any kind.

+ Republicans have offered up targeted cuts as a way to shift more money into defense, but Democrats have made clear they will not agree to any kind of tradeoff where social programs are cut so the military can be made whole.

+ Even though Republicans set out a discretionary budget of $967 billion, they can't seem to keep GOP troops in line to vote for that plan; on Wednesday, House GOP leaders yanked a Transportation spending bill off the floor when it became obvious that Republicans were short on votes for the plan, as just four of the 12 spending bills have been acted on by the House.

+ The record is much worse in the Senate, where none of the dozen spending bills for next year have been approved; the Senate's version of the Transportation spending bill may get hung up by filibuster on Thursday.

+ The idea of the House voting for the Senate's $1.058 trillion budget seems far-fetched.

+ The idea of the Senate voting for the House's $967 billion budget seems unlikely as well.

But in that sea of inaction, that $967 billion figure for discretionary spending may be the trump card for Republicans - because if Congress can't get anything done at all on the sequester - that $967 bllion is the post-sequester budget level in law under the Budget Control Act.

American economy adds modest 162,000 jobs in July

Chart shows unemployment rate and monthly job creation; 2c x 3 inches; 96.3 mm x 76 mm;

(AP) ? The U.S. economy is steadily adding jobs ? just not at a consistently strong pace.

July's modest gain of 162,000 jobs was the smallest since March. And most of the job growth came in lower-paying industries or part-time work.

The unemployment rate fell from 7.6 percent to a 4?-year low of 7.4 percent, still well above the 5 percent to 6 percent typical of a healthy economy. The rate fell because more Americans said they were working, though some people stopped looking for a job and were no longer counted as unemployed.

All told, Friday's report from the Labor Department pointed to a less-than-robust job market. It suggested that the economy's subpar growth and modest consumer spending are making many businesses cautious about hiring.

The report is bound to be a key factor in the Federal Reserve's decision on whether to slow its bond purchases in September, as many economists have predicted it will do. Some think July's weaker hiring could make the Fed hold off on any pullback in its bond buying, which has helped keep long-term borrowing costs down.

Friday's report said employers added a combined 26,000 fewer jobs in May and June than the government had previously estimated. Americans also worked fewer hours in July, and their average pay dipped.

For the year, job growth has remained steady. The economy has added an average of 200,000 jobs a month since January, though the pace has slowed in the past three months to 175,000.

Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, called the employment report "slightly negative," in part because job growth for May and June was revised down.

Scott Anderson, chief economist at Bank of the West, said it showed "a mixed labor market picture of continued improvement but at a still frustratingly slow pace."

The reaction from investors was muted. Stock averages closed with modest gains. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.6 percent from 2.71 percent ? a sign that investors think the economy remains sluggish and might need continued help from the Fed.

Beth Ann Bovino, senior economist at Standard & Poor's, said she thinks the Fed will delay any slowdown in its $85 billion a month in bond purchases.

"September seems very unlikely now," she says. "I'm wondering if December is still in the cards."

Still, it's possible that the lower unemployment rate, along with the hiring gains over the past year, could convince the Fed that the job market is strengthening consistently. Job growth has topped 140,000 each month for nearly a year, and unemployment has steadily declined.

"While July itself was a bit disappointing, the Fed will be looking at the cumulative improvement," said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics. "On that score, the unemployment rate has fallen from 8.1 percent last August to 7.4 percent this July, which is a significant improvement."

The government uses a survey of mostly large businesses and government agencies to determine how many jobs are added or lost each month. That's the survey that produced the gain of 162,000 jobs for July.

It uses a separate survey of households to calculate the unemployment rate. That survey captures hiring by companies of all sizes, including small businesses, new companies, farm workers and the self-employed.

The household survey found that 227,000 more people said they were employed last month. And 37,000 people stopped looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.

The number of self-employed jumped 241,000, or 2.6 percent, to 9.7 million ? the most in eight months. This group includes freelance workers, construction contractors, lawyers and other professionals with solo practices and farmers and ranchers.

Combined, those factors explain why the unemployment rate declined from 7.6 percent to 7.4 percent.

More than half of July's job gain in the survey of big companies and government agencies came from retailers, restaurants and bars, which tend to offer lower pay. That extends a trend that's limiting Americans' incomes and possibly slowing consumer spending. Retailers, for example, added nearly 47,000 jobs ? the biggest gain for any industry last month. Restaurants and bars added 38,400.

One Atlanta-based retailer, Cellairis, which sells mobile phone accessories, says it hired about 75 employees last month to meet growing demand. The company has 650 U.S. outlets, most of them mall kiosks. It plans to add 45 walk-in stores this year.

"People are willing to spend more now to protect and personalize their devices," said CEO Taki Skouras.

By contrast, employers in higher-paying industries, like Stripmatic, a steel parts maker in Cleveland, remain wary. Stripmatic hasn't hired anyone since adding five workers in the first three months of the year. Revenue has fallen 10 percent below projections this year.

The company's exports have picked up a bit in Mexico and Brazil but remain flat in Asia. Company President Bill Adler says he's concerned that slower growth in China could hamper his overseas sales.

Low-paying industries have accounted for 61 percent of jobs added this year, even though they represent only 39 percent of U.S. jobs overall, according to government data analyzed by Moody's Analytics. Mid-paying industries have accounted for fewer than 22 percent of the jobs added.

Some job gains were made in higher-paying fields last month. Financial services, which include banking, real estate and insurance, added 15,000 positions. Information technology added 4,300 and accounting 2,500. And manufacturing added 6,000 jobs, though that figure was offset by an equivalent loss in construction.

One growing source of better-paying jobs is local governments. They've now added jobs for five straight months and have helped offset job cuts by state and federal governments.

The result is that governments overall are much less of a drag on hiring than in the first three years of the economic recovery, which began in the summer of 2009. All told, they've shed 39,000 jobs in the 12 months that ended in July. That's down from a loss of 137,000 in the 12 months that ended in July 2012.

Most of the hiring by local governments has been for teachers and other jobs related to education. Local property tax revenue, a key source of funding for localities, fell after the recession but has begun to recover in some communities. Nationwide, home prices have risen, a trend that typically leads to higher property tax revenue.

More broadly, many of the jobs added in July were only part time. The number of Americans who said they were working part time but would prefer full-time work stands at 8.2 million ? the highest since last fall. Part-time jobs accounted for 65 percent of the jobs added in July and 77 percent of those added this year.

The government defines part-time work as being fewer than 35 hours a week.

The percentage of adult Americans either working or actively seeking work dipped in July to 63.4 percent. This is called the "labor force participation rate." The participation rate has been generally declining since peaking at 67.3 percent in 2000. That's partly the result of baby boomers retiring and leaving the workforce.

Job gains are being slowed by the economy's tepid growth. It grew at an annual rate of just 1.7 percent in the April-June quarter, the government said this week. That was an improvement over the previous two quarters, but it's still far too weak to rapidly lower unemployment.

Recent data suggest that the economy could strengthen in the second half of the year.

Fantasy baseball world: Young pitchers to consider

Tony Cingrani

Reds starter Tony Cingrani had a 2.90 earned-run average in 77 2/3 innings this season. (Nhat V. Meyer / McClatchy-Tribune / July 23, 2013)

August 3, 2013, 4:02 p.m.

Talented young pitchers are in abundance this season, and staff writer Tim Hubbard looks at three who could play pivotal roles for contending teams real or fantasy.

Chris Archer

SP | Tampa Bay

After the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs thought of him as expendable, the Rays are reaping the spoils of the talented Mr. Archer. The 24-year-old right-hander started the season in the minors, but has been a major cog for one of baseball's hottest team, and has a 6-4 record with a 2.65 earned-run average and a 1.08 WHIP. Hitters are managing only a .201 batting average against Archer, who had given up only one run in his previous four starts before losing to San Francisco on Friday.

Tony Cingrani

SP | Cincinnati

The Dodgers know first hand about Cingrani's talent, as they were held scoreless and struck out 11 times in seven innings by the left-hander last Sunday. Cingrani has spent much of the season shuttling between Cincinnati and Louisville, the team's triple-A affiliate, but the 24-year-old is doing his best to stick with the big club, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.90 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings.

Randall Delgado

SP | Arizona

After a losing bid to land the Diamondbacks' last rotation spot in the spring, Delgado found himself getting knocked around at triple A to the tune of a 1-4 record with a 6.84 ERA in 11 starts. But two solid outings and a Brandon McCarthy injury later and the 23-year-old Panamanian was called up, and he is making the most of the opportunity. The right-hander was 3-1 in July with a 2.14 ERA, giving Arizona the confidence to trade former ace Ian Kennedy for bullpen help.

Vera Bradley will expand design HQ, add 128 jobs

Just how many purses does a woman need anyway?

The answer must be plenty as Vera Bradley Inc. is at it again with a $26.6 million investment and a plan to create up to 128 new jobs by 2017, the company announced Friday.

Just two years ago, the handbag designer announced a $22.5 million expansion for its Roanoke distribution center to 420,000 square feet, adding 124 new jobs. Now, it plans to expand its present 40,000-square-foot design center by 149,000 square feet and grow its distribution center an additional 10,000 square feet.

Both locations are just south of Fort Wayne, off the Lafayette Center Road exit on Interstate 69. The expansions should be completed by next year.

?We are proud to invest in our home state,? Barbara Bradley Baekgaard, chief creative officer and cofounder, said in a statement.

?Our design center expansion will bring nearly all of our northeast Indiana employees together on one campus.?

And eventually the company intends to have all of its operations at the Stonebridge Road campus, spokeswoman Melissa Schenkel said. The company has its headquarters at 2208 Production Road, and a manufacturing operation in New Haven.

That pleases officials at the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance.

?Ever since the company went public in 2010 there have been others out there (courting) them,? said Ashley Steenman, vice president of business development for the alliance. ?They?ve become a global company. We always want Allen County and Fort Wayne to be the first place they consider when they?re adding facilities and workers.?

That growth hasn?t been without some pains. The company more than doubled its share price to $52.25 in May 2011 from its first trading price of $24.85. On Friday, Vera Bradley shares closed at $22.65, down $1.32 or 5.5 percent on the Nasdaq stock market.

The company also is in the midst of replacing CEO Michael Ray, who announced his retirement in June ? the same day the corporation reported a 27 percent drop in earnings for its first fiscal quarter. Ray is Baekgaard?s son-in-law.

Supporters and others insist the future is bright for Vera Bradley.

?As I travel across this great Hoosier state, I witness daily the endless possibilities that can result from a terrific idea,? Gov. Mike Pence said in a statement. ? ? I?m proud that because of Indiana?s low- tax, pro-growth business climate, the company has been able to grow at an incredible rate right here at home, further proving that Indiana is a state that works for business.?

Founded 31 years ago by Baekgaard and Patricia R. Miller, Vera Bradley products are available at 79 retail stores and 14 outlet locations across the country.

Fiscal 2013 net revenue was $541 million. Vera Bradley has 1,000 full-time employees in Indiana.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. has offered the company up to $1.75 million in conditional tax credits.

The tax credits are performance-based, meaning until Hoosiers are hired the company is not eligible to claim incentives. Allen County will consider additional property tax abatement, but officials were unavailable Friday to comment further.

DaVita settles in Federal Way office and plans to add jobs

Kidney dialysis company DaVita Healthcare Partners Inc. moved its accounting and payroll operations to Federal Way ? along with 350 jobs and room to grow.

Based in Denver, DaVita is a publicly-traded Fortune 500 company (NYSE:DVA) that claims billionaire investor Warren Buffett as its largest shareholder. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. owns 15.6 million shares (about 15 percent) of DaVita stock, according to USA Today. DaVita reported $8.186 billion in revenue in 2012.

DaVita serves 160,000 patients at nearly 2,000 kidney dialysis clinics across the U.S. and in nine other nations. Federal Way is already home to a 24-seat dialysis clinic at 1015 S. 348th St.

Located in a remodeled building on the Weyerhaeuser campus, the Federal Way accounting office plans to add at least 50 more jobs in the near future to help handle the entire company's finances.

The Federal Way office measures about 125,000 square feet. The site was selected because of its proximity to Tacoma, therefore minimizing disruption to employees' commutes.

"We were running out of space in downtown Tacoma," said Lin Whatcott, senior director for corporate accounting, on the move to Federal Way in April. "It was fortunate we found this big building that was sitting empty."

Jim Hilger, DaVita's chief accounting officer, told The Mirror last fall that one perk of moving a portion of employees to Federal Way is the lack of a Business and Occupation (B&O) tax. About 550 employees remain at the downtown Tacoma office.

Employees hail from King and Pierce counties. The Federal Way office presents a vibrant atmosphere filled with reminders of the company's core values for service.

One of those values is reflected in the name of the company itself: DaVita means "giving life" in Italian.

DaVita employees also receive permission to spend up to eight paid hours a year on community service projects. In one local example, a team from the tax department helped package school supplies for Federal Way-based World Vision.

About kidney dialysis

Patients suffering from kidney failure either need a transplant or dialysis to stay alive. With kidney dialysis, a machine removes and filters waste from the blood and body. Patients typically undergo dialysis three days a week for an average of four hours per session. Unless they find a kidney transplant, the patients must endure dialysis for life.

DaVita's Federal Way dialysis center serves 146 patients. Of those patients, about 26 self-administer their treatment at home, according to David Natali, regional operations director. Dialysis patients often have other health complications in addition to kidney failure. Life expectancy for dialysis patients is typically seven to 10 years.

But it was long enough for the world?s photographers to capture his tiny hands emerging from a cotton swaddle printed with little birds. Distinctive little birds. (AP Photo/Alastair Grant, file)

LONDON (AP) ? It took 45 seconds, but it was enough.

Newborn Prince George, carried from the hospital to the royal car, appeared in a cotton swaddle with the tiny birds on it. Mums-to-be around the world wanted to know: Who are you wearing?

The answer shows what it is like when a small company gets swept into the maelstrom of attention that comes from touching the golden hem of the House of Windsor.

Once the photos of the swaddle hit the Internet, style bloggers and fashion writers identified the would-be king's new clothes as being from New York-based aden + anais. Within four hours of George's appearance, the website crashed. The next day, the site crashed again. In nine days, the company had 7,000 orders ? a 600 percent increase in sales on that item.

The company never even issued a press release. Anyone who wanted to know the manufacturer simply had to type "royal swaddle" into Google, and up it came.

Raegan Moya-Jones, the chief executive of aden + anais, was about to start a meeting when a colleague brought in the picture. She couldn't believe it.

"I thought it was photo-shopped," she said.

The company is still digging out from under a pile of orders for the swaddle, part of the Jungle Jam pack of four that costs 44.95 pounds ($68).

The average daily visits to its site were off the charts: In Britain, they were up 1,960 percent; in Australia, up 892 percent; in Japan 791 percent and in the U.S., up 458 percent.

So just be prepared to wait if you want to similarly swaddle your little prince or princess. Jungle Jam is sold out for now in Britain and the United States. Desperate swaddle searchers can find them on the company's Australian site if they hurry. Shipping fees are extra.

And there's a factory run from China of 10,000. So hold on.

People just want to be a part of things says Cele Otnes, a professor of marketing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and co-author of the upcoming book "Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture." She said the rush to buy whatever the royals wear gives admirers a chance to participate in a big, happy event.

"This is history," she said. "If you can't be there, if you can't have a royal baby yourself, you can buy the swaddle."

The royals do grant warrants ? a mark of recognition of those who supply goods or services to the Royal Household. Fortnum & Mason has one for example, for being a "Grocer & Provision Merchant" to the monarch. But there are no royal adverts.

Nonetheless the royals remain marketing gold.

They have always been trendsetters. Even Queen Victoria once promoted a ball to help the Spitalfields silk industry, Otnes said. More recently, Princess Diana's every ruffled collar or bow-lined stocking could set off the cash registers.

But Prince George is the first heir to the throne born in the Internet age. New mums and dads can see what Kate and Wills and ? now baby George ? are wearing and buy it instantly.

This goes way beyond commemorative china, tea towels and other trinkets ? the traditional sort of souvenir that shoppers can pick up at the Buckingham Palace gift store.

There's even a name for it: the Kate Effect. It started with the sapphire blue wrap dress designed by Daniella Helayel that the then-Kate Middleton wore to announce her engagement ? and just kept going. Take the white dress Kate wore in the couple's engagement photo ? sold by UK retailer Reiss ? or Topshop's black dress with a Peter Pan collar that she wore for a video appeal.

Fashionistas follow Kate's every move. Every blouse, shoe, and bag the future queen of England wears is fodder for style bloggers and a money-spinner for retailers.

She's been democratic about it ? choosing stuff that is accessible to the average person and supporting British products in a big way.

And now there's George, who isn't even wearing clothes yet but has managed to get blankets out the door. And it isn't just the ones from aden + anais. Little George first appeared in a white crocheted blanket from G.H. Hurt & Son of Nottingham, England. They are swamped with orders, too, after photographers zeroed in on the firm's label, blew it up and posted it on the net.

And yet, this is just the start. Otnes said that the trend will just continue as George gets older. Get ready for the booties, the scooter, the sun hat. Firms can get overwhelmed by the attention, which comes fast, hot and for a limited time only.

"You had better hold on," Otnes advised companies in the limelight. "And put on another shift."

Moya-Jones, a native of Australia who started in the swaddle business because she couldn't find what she wanted in stores, didn't anticipate the royal wave. Even though aden + anais have wrapped the babies of celebs like Beyonce, the spotlight that turned on her company with Prince George was altogether different.

After all, her privately held company isn't huge ? founded seven years ago, it has 65 full-time employees and about as many part-time staff. In addition to swaddles, aden + anais makes sleeping bags, bibs, blankets and sheets, and Moya-Jones doesn't want to put so much emphasis on Jungle Jam swaddles that customers who want other products feel they are being ignored.

And then there's the shock factor ? even if it was a happy shock. The company didn't send the royals their product and expect them to use it. That's just not done.

Moya-Jones only learned after she saw pictures that Kate reportedly picked out the muslin swaddle personally at a London store.

"That's the nicest thing," she said. "At the end of the day, the duchess is a first-time mum, like all of us once were."

Nintendo needs moregames like 'Pikmin 3' for the Wii U, and it needs them now

Nintendo

"Pikmin 3" is by far the best game released so far for Nintendo's struggling Wii U console, which raises the question: why isn't the company focusing on making more games like it?

When you think of Nintendo, the first images that jump to your mind are probably fairly predictable: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, maybe even Zelda or Link, that guy with a sword that's always trying to save the princess.

What about Pikmin??

That's what I thought. While the series has been around for more than a decade (debuting in 2001 with the original "Pikmin" for the then-current generation GameCube console), it's remained one of Nintendo's best-kept secrets ? never possessing the star power of "Super Mario Bros." or the cultural ubiquity of "Super Smash Bros." And to the uninitiated that only know Nintendo as the company that makes "Mario Kart" games, that's a shame, because, well, "Pikmin 3" is one of the best video games I've played in years.

"Pikmin 3" begins with the three astronauts you control being marooned on a mysterious planet during a space expedition they were conducting in search of food. As you begin to explore your new Earth-like surroundings, you encounter a series of brightly colored bug-eyed sprites (the titular Pikmin) that look like a cross between Wall-E and the little coal-puffs from "Spirited Away." These ridiculously, almost painfully, adorable critters become the main tools in your arsenal to scavenge for rations.

Navigating the hazardous terrain of each gorgeously-realized level in the game's single-player campaign requires tactful use of the Pikmin to do everything from build bridges and tear down walls to slay gigantic spiders. Need to break through a wall of ice? Try hurling a group of the hefty Rock Pikmin at it. Want to conduct an electrical charge to light up a room and scare away bats? Send Yellow Pikmin into the high-voltage zone. Just don't send either of them into the water; that's what the Blue Pikmin are for. And unlike other real-time strategy games like "StarCraft" or "Command & Conquer," your commander in "Pikmin 3" is literally in the trenches next to the foot soldiers, deftly (or, in my case, clumsily) aiming the different-colored Pikmin at enemies or pieces of fruit.

Combat is "Pikmin 3" is frenetic and disorganized, adding to the tension that makes it such a good strategy game.

Combat is "Pikmin 3" is frenetic and disorganized, adding to the tension that makes it such a good strategy game.

The phrase "herding cats" comes to mind when trying to describe "Pikmin's" gameplay, which helps explain what makes this game feel unique and comfortably familiar at the same time. Like any good Pixar movie, it artfully balances equal parts of joyfulness and pathos to tell its story. The cutesiness of the Pikmin can seem sugary to a fault at first, but the game's central objective ? gathering food for survival ? jolts every puzzle with emotional urgency. And for what appears to be a children's game at first glance, "Pikmin 3" is hard.

Rather than setting up an arbitrary series of levels players can peruse at their own pace, the game sets all of its challenges against the emotionless face of a clock. You have from sun-up to sundown to find enough food for the next day, and any Pikmin that perish in-between are up to you to replace by harvesting more flora and fauna.

Now there's a face that pretty much anybody can love.

Nintendo

Now there's a face that pretty much anybody can love.

The manual labor invested in making each day of "Pikmin 3's" campaign successful sets it apart from pretty much any other strategy game I can remember playing recently, as the simply beauty of the game's animations and the ruthless difficulty of its mechanics make you for more emotionally invested in keeping your troops alive than, say, a match of "StarCraft 2" ever does. But there's something else that's equally important that sets "Pikmin 3" apart from other placeholders of the real-time strategy genre: it's coming out exclusively for the Wii U console.

Each level in "Pikmin 3" requires tactful use of the different-colored critters to successfully navigate hazardous terrain. The game's excellent multiplayer matches are all the more challenging because it requires two players to remain organized and efficient while using the same pool of resources.

As I've reported many, many, times now, Nintendo's new-ish console hasn't been doing the company much good. Less than a year on the market, the Wii U's sales took a particularly sharp nose-dive this past fiscal quarter. Nintendo itself has now admitted that it is to blame for the persistently weak Wii U sales, and even suggested that it needs some new franchises to throw into its predictable mix of games.

A brand new Nintendo franchise sounds intriguing. But after playing "Pikmin 3," I'm not so sure if churning one out simply for the sake of making something new is such a good idea. As Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter told me back in April, the company already has plenty of IP. What's important is what Nintendo chooses to do with it. "Pikmin 3" may not be "new" in the sense that Nintendo fans have been able to toss around these adorable little creatures since the early 2000s. But it's new in the sense that the "Pikmin" series is still evolving, still growing and improving over time, whereas every new "Super Mario Bros." game is basically the one before it with slightly better graphics. Simply put: I could leave gaming behind content with the fact that I never got the chance to play the next Mario game that Nintendo will inevitably release. Not so with Pikmin.

I don't know if "Pikmin 3" is enough on its own to convince curious gamers to invest in a Wii U. But it's the first game that made me truly appreciate the new console. As one video game writer put it to me on Twitter recently: "I want to want a Wii U." Well, "Pikmin 3" is a start.?

The Red Sox won 8-7. (AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)

(AP) ? The Boston Red Sox trailed by five runs when Daniel Nava walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, and the hopes of a second consecutive walkoff win were too remote to consider.

"I don't think anybody saw that coming," Nava said, describing the "tempered excitement" in the dugout as the bases filled and emptied during a six-run ninth inning that gave Boston an 8-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. "You could see it happening, but it was still too far off."

By the time the Red Sox batted around the order, and Nava came up again, the score was tied, the bases were loaded and there was still only one out. Nava lined a long single over the center fielder to bring the Boston players out of the dugout for the increasingly familiar celebration.

One night after winning in 15 innings for their major league-leading 10th walkoff victory, the Red Sox did it again to sweep Seattle and open a one-game lead in the AL East over the idle Tampa Bay Rays.

"We don't quit. Ever," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "We truly believe we have a chance to do something special on a given night or given year. And that happens to be this year."

Henry Blanco hit a grand slam, and Felix Hernandez allowed six hits before leaving after seven innings with a 7-1 lead. Kendrys Morales had four hits and a pair of walks, and Kyle Seager and Brad Miller tripled for the Mariners, who have lost 17 games in the opponent's final at-bat ? including eight walkoff losses.

"We've been through this before," first baseman Justin Smoak said, "too many times."

Hernandez seemed to be cruising to his seventh consecutive victory, but the Red Sox scored one in the eighth against Charlie Furbush and then cut it to 7-3 against closer Tom Wilhelmsen in the ninth. Perez (2-3) came on with the bases loaded and nobody out, giving up Shane Victorino's two-run single and an RBI base hit to Dustin Pedroia that made it 7-6.

David Ortiz struck out, then Jonny Gomes singled off Yoervis Medina to tie it. Stephen Drew, who provided the decisive hit on Wednesday night, walked to load the bases before Nava hit a ball off the garage door in center field as the Red Sox celebrated.

"We were trying to forget what happened yesterday," said Perez, who blew a seventh-inning lead on Wednesday night and took the loss on Thursday even though he was the only one of the three relievers who pitched in the ninth to record an out. "We just couldn't complete three outs. Everything went their way in the ninth."

Steven Wright (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Ryan Dempster. Victorino homered for Boston, which was in danger of falling out of first place, percentage points behind the Rays, in the AL East.

On the day that Jake Peavy arrived in the dugout to bolster the Boston pitching staff for the stretch run, Dempster made a case to lose his spot in the rotation. He gave up seven runs on nine hits and five walks, striking out six in six innings.

It was 2-1 after Jacoby Ellsbury doubled and scored in the third, but Dempster ran into trouble against Blanco ? a .189 hitter ? in the fifth.

With Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk watching from the luxury boxes, the Mariners catcher hit a line drive over the Green Monster just inside the left-field foul pole to give Seattle a 7-1 lead.

Hernandez, who had yet to record a 1-2-3 inning, then set down the Red Sox in order in the fifth and sixth innings.

Notes: Hernandez allowed one run and walked two and struck out eight. He hasn't lost since May 25 and has allowed more than two earned runs just twice in 12 starts since then. ... Blanco's only other homer this season was also a grand slam, against Oakland on June 15. It was the third grand slam of his career. ... Gomes received a standing ovation when he came off the field in the middle of the ninth after throwing one runner out at third and making a catch while crashing into the Green Monster. ... Seattle's Endy Chavez stranded seven runners in his first three at-bats and eight in all. ... The Red Sox have won nine straight home games against the Mariners. ... The Red Sox haven't scored first in their last nine home games. ... The previous nine homers Dempster had allowed were solo shots. ... Hernandez allowed one or fewer runs for the 97th time in his career ? the most in the majors since 2005. ... Boston added Peavy to the 40-man roster on Thursday and recalled right-hander Wright from Triple-A Pawtucket. The club also optioned righty Jose De La Torre to Pawtucket. Brandon Workman was optioned to Pawtucket after Wednesday night's game.

Supreme Court Orders the Release of Thousands of California Inmates

August 2, 2013 Updated Aug 2, 2013 at 4:50 PM PDT

The U.S. Supreme Court refused Friday to let California delay the release of thousands of inmates from state prisons to relieve crowding.

In June, a lower court ordered California to release about 10,000 inmates ? nearly 8 percent of all state prisoners ? by the end of the year to improve to improve medical and mental health treatment. Gov. Jerry Brown last month asked the Supreme Court to delay the order, arguing that it would jeopardize public safety.

Justice Antonin Scalia, joined by Justice Clarence Thomas, strongly dissented with the high court's 6-3 one-sentence order Friday, predicting a wave of murders and rapes in the streets of California. Justice Samuel Alito also disagreed but didn't join Scalia's dissent.

Brown also blasted the decision Friday, saying, "California must now release upon the public nearly 10,000 inmates convicted of serious crimes, about 1,000 for every city larger than Santa Ana."

WNBA Predictions -Los Angeles Sparks vs Washington Mystics Featured on Sunday

Sunday, August 4th

Los Angeles Sparks at Washington Mystics (NBA-TV)

This will be the third game in five days for the Washington Mystics as they played on Wednesday and on Friday. The Los Angeles Sparks also played on Friday but at least they had Wednesday off.

The Los Angeles Sparks have won six of the last ten in this series but they are just 3-7 ATS. They have actually done much better in this series on the road when it comes to covering the WNBA lines. They have covered four of the last six in Washington. I will take the road team and lay the small number in this game.

Tulsa Shock at San Antonio Silver Stars

Both teams played on Friday so there is no advantage in terms of rest. This series has been dominated by the San Antonio Silver Stars straight up as they have won 9 of the last 10 but they are just 5-5 ATS at home in the last ten games in this series. This is a total sandwich game for the San Antonio Silver Stars as they were at the Minnesota Lynx on Friday and they play them again on Tuesday. I will take the points in WNBA predictions with the Tulsa Shock in this game.

Seattle Storm at Minnesota Lynx

The Minnesota Lynx are heavily favored at home to win this one on Sunday. They have taken 7 of the last 10 in this series and they have won 8 of the last 10 in Minnesota including the last seven. I will lay the points at the offshore sportsbook and take the Minnesota Lynx in this game.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Looming playoffs could force an end to negotiations in baseball's latest drug scandal as pressure builds to impose penalties so stars can still make the postseason.

Monday appears to be the deadline for Alex Rodriguez and 13 others to accept suspensions for their ties to the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic. While A-Rod is expected to get a lengthy ban, a penalty starting that day would allow Texas All-Star outfielder Nelson Cruz to return for October.

Major League Baseball is prepared to issue two simultaneous announcements no later than Monday, a person familiar with the process told The Associated Press on Thursday. One would list players who accept suspensions; the other would name those disciplined without deals, but who could challenge penalties before an arbitrator.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

Most players face 50-game suspensions for their links to the now-closed Florida clinic, which has been accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs.

But baseball is threatening to kick Rodriguez out for life unless the three-time AL MVP agrees to a long ban, perhaps around 200 games.

Rodriguez appeared ready to talk Thursday as he was leaving the team's minor league complex in Tampa, Fla., waving a group of writers to his car in the parking lot and rolling down the window. However, when he saw a second group with TV cameras approaching, he said: "I'll talk to you guys, but no cameras."

Rodriguez closed the window and waited a moment, then left without saying another word.

Baseball's highest-paid player with a $28 million salary, Rodriguez played in a simulated game and saw 31 pitches over six at-bats, played third and ran bases.

The Yankees expect A-Rod to be accused of recruiting other athletes for the clinic, attempting to obstruct MLB's investigation, and not being truthful with MLB in the past. Baseball has considered suspending him for violations of its labor contract and drug agreement, which would cause him to start serving his penalty before the case would go to arbitration.

Sidelined following hip surgery in January and then a strained quadriceps, the 38-year-old third baseman hopes to return to the Yankees in a few days. He is to play Friday and Saturday at Double-A Trenton, putting himself in position to rejoin New York for Monday's series opener at the Chicago White Sox if he's not banned.

Barring a rainout this weekend, Cruz's Rangers would have exactly 50 games remaining before they play at the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. If he files a grievance, as a first offender, the penalty would be delayed until after a decision by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. But the lengthy legal process likely would risk his eligibility for the playoffs and the start of next season.

Cruz said Thursday he hadn't made any decision about a possible appeal. Asked whether he was told specifically what penalty could be forthcoming, Cruz responded, "No, I cannot tell you. Sorry."

Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta is the other targeted All-Star on a pennant contender, and the Tigers would have 53 games left before playing at Cleveland on Monday.

Another All-Star shortstop, San Diego's Everth Cabrera, could serve all of a 50-game suspension this year if he begins with the Padres' game against Baltimore on Tuesday.

Others facing discipline include injured Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli and Seattle catcher Jesus Montero, who is in the minor leagues with Triple-A Tacoma.
